St. Maarten-St. Martin Classic Yacht Regatta 2008 committee issued this Press Release:
"Third St. Maarten-St. Martin Classic Yacht Regatta scheduled for third week-end in January 2008
West Indies Events and the St.Maarten-St.Martin Classic Yacht Regatta organization announced the preliminary schedule today for the upcoming event in 2008.
The successful regatta is in her third edition and the program is spread out over four days with 3 race days and four parties.
Everything will start off with the registration day followed by the official opening's cocktail party and skipper's briefing on Thursday January 17, 2008. Friday will be the first race day with a course start around 11.00 am out of Simpson Bay, St. Maarten to the French side of the Island, Marigot, in St. Martin.
The yachts will be on the docks at Fort Louis Marina after the regatta which will allow the general public to have a look at the magnificent classics.
Drinks and food will be available for captains and crew and a party for everyone will be thrown in the Fort Louis marina parking lot.
A live band will be on stage until 11.00 PM. Saturday will see the yachts starting at 10.00 am on a course to Great Bay where they will arrive in the early afternoon.
A regatta village on the beach at the Pasanggrahan Royal Guest House and Hotel will accommodate the public while yacht owners, captains and crew will be offered the famous free beach buffet like the previous years.
Local boat races will be held in the late afternoon around 4.00 PM, again, as last year, in cooperation with Taloula Mango's and with starts from the Great Bay beach right in front of the bar / restaurant.
Late afternoon and evening activities will also be concentrated around Taloula Mango's as well as the regatta party with live band.
A VIP location will accommodate press, sponsors and invited guests the same evening. The start on Sunday will be again at 11.00 am out of Great Bay and yachts will race to Simpson Bay where they will finish around 4.00 PM.
A second local boat regatta will start off the Great Bay beach again on Sunday.
A silent auction, official award giving ceremony, buffet and prize giving party in Simpson Bay will close off the first class sailing event. Richard West from Anguilla managed to win the first place overall in the two previous St. Maarten-St. Martin Classic Yacht regattas and will defend his title again in the upcoming races.
Promotion and public relation actions are conducted in the Caribbean, the USA and Europe to attract sailors and owners of classic yachts from all over to the Island in January.
Together with a new classic regatta in Grenada scheduled for February and the long time established Antigua Classics, the Caribbean circuit for classic yachts becomes more and more attractive and will convince yacht owners to have their yacht sailing to the tropics to participate in those events.
