I think we have all had the experience of waiting anxiously at baggage claim, hoping the luggage made it. Unfortunately it is becoming more common to have it not arrive with you. Some motivated people solve the problem by only taking what they can fit in a carry-on bag. This really is the answer, but for most of us, it's just not an option.

If you held on to your baggage claim tag and if you can find a helpful airline employee, the airline should be able to track your bag for you. If they find it, you could have it in as little as hours, but it can also sometimes take days.

On our last trip, it took my friend 4 days and required us to return to the airport (short walk from Trellis Bay, Tortola). From past experiences over the years I have learned a few things about lost luggage:
  • Always put your medications and valuables in a carry on.
  • Be sure to pack undergarments and a bathing suit in your hand luggage. T. shirts and shorts are easy to replace along the way but underwear is not.
  • Never pack anything perishable in your checked bags.
  • Put additional ID information inside the luggage as sometimes the outside tags get torn off.
  • When you replace any items you need be sure to save the receipts. You will need them in order to be reimbursed by the airlines or trip insurance.

My friend did not have trip insurace and was only reimbursed $50 by the airline. If he had the insurance he would have up to $100 a day, maximum of $500.

I hope you never have to be the one staring at an empty carousel, but if you are heading for a charter in the islands, the good news is you don't need much anyway.
