Caribbean Sailing Vacations by Ed Hamilton
Road Town past and present
'Tortola Yacht Services was the only place yachts could tie up in Road Harbor. The dock is now used by Conch Charters. The marine railway was next door. TYS eventually moved to reclaimed land on Wichams Cay 2 and became the huge yard next to The Moorings.

The original site of The Moorings was to the right (west) of the old TYS dock, in the Waterfront buildings (not yet built in this picture).

The buildings and the first dock at Village Cay Marina were built in 1975. There was very little else on the Cay, besides the three banks which were built in the first boom in the late 60's, when so many pioneer investors lost hard. When Ed first sailed into Road Town in 1972 he saw 4 bedroom houses for sale in prime spots for $15,000. They would be worth millions now.

The road through town originally finished just past the headland and the only way to West End was via a torturous track through the hills. The present West End road was built by British Army Engineers.
